The Difficulty Bomb is a piece of code written into the Ethereum blockchain that gradually makes the process of Proof of Work mining exponentially harder.
This was a planned technical mechanism used to force the entire network to switch to the newer Proof of Stake system by making the old mining method nearly impossible to continue profitably.
